Love goes through cycles.
Infatuation and Autonomy.
Galpin, Chicago-based Rs Masters's first solo release, aims to be a representation of one of the many shapes love can take. Drawing inspiration from Minnesotan snowstorms, frozen lakes, and fireplaces, Galpin is a collection of soundbaths, live performances, unsynchronized loops and field recordings.
The album begins with Before, a twelve and a half minute improvised performance reacting to views of a sudden snowstorm from a cabin window. Themes of wind, cold, and chaos are employed to take the listener to this space and time.
After the wind gusts and turmoil of track one dissipate, the album opens up into an exploration of space. Track two, Hello, begins with a 9 minute sound bath performed outside in subzero temperatures next to a frozen Minnesotan lake. Aspects of the sound bath change location throughout the performance to challenge the listener to consider three dimensional space rather than a traditional stereo field. The sound bath is accompanied by a live performance reacting to the trees' movement and interaction with light and wind.
Bliss, the third track begins with sounds of stepping out into a warming, but still cold, world. Snow is melting and the sun is beckoning nature to wake up after the storm. A live performance accompanies improvised loops and field recordings, inviting the listener to feel the warmth of the sun through a window on a cold day. Crack the window slightly and allow fresh air in.
The final track, Goodbye, is a sudden departure from it all. Pops and hisses from a crackling fire accompany a sound bath performance next to a fireplace with the intent of warming the listener before their next journey into a cold world. The sound bath is joined by a contemplative live performance with themes of uncertainty and remorse.
